Text Entry Mode

I recently got a replacement for my damaged 5800, (a new one) and I am having problems changing the entry mode for my text messaging. After every message I send it defaults back to xt9.

Somehow on my original 5800 this did not happen. It was defaulting to abc, which is the setting I want. I looked at the cd-users manual. This did not help...

any suggestions?
