Make your own ringtones
To get this to work you need four things.
1. A motorola V710 or e815. Sorry guys, these are the only two.
2. A transflash memory card (any size will do)
3. A memory card reader or adapter to be placed in your computer
4. Internet connection
Thats it. There is a glitch that allows you to make your own ringtones without performing seems edits (seem edits void warranty). Essentially you have to put music (or whatever you want as a ring tone) on your memory card and place the card in your phone. Where you get the music is up to you but I have found that online sites that sell cds are the best because they give you 30 second clips of the songs as a free preview to decide if you want to buy the album. 30 seconds is coincidently the max length of an audio clip that can be sent in a pix message. All you do is save the preview clip to your desktop and then copy it into the memory card. The music works best in mp3 format but most online sites like walmart.com and bestbuy.com use that file type anyway.
Now here is the incredibly sly, sneaky, and down right crafty way to do this...
Send a pix message to a fake number (example- 555-555-5555). In this message, select INSERT -> Sound and then "switch storage device" to the memory card and pick the audio file you want as your ring tone. Send the message. After attempting to send the message it will tell you that it failed delivery (this is good). Go back into your sent message folder and open the failed message. The audio you want as a ringtone will play automatically. Go to menu then save. Select the audio file and use the soft key corresponding to "store". It will give you two options as to where to save, select "phone" It will then say "store only" or "apply as ringtone", select apply as ringtone and there you go. Free ringtone.
Why it works: Moto has a block in the phone for music transfer from card to phone for use as a ringtone. By sending it to a bogus destination, the resulting failed message receipt is saved, with audio, to the phone itself. Now that the audio is on the phone you can, due to bypassing the block, set it as a ringtone. The best part of this is that since the pix message didn't go through, you didn't get charged a quarter for it (even if you don't have a pix plan) so it is literally free to do it as many times as you want. Better than 2.99 a song through VZ Tones Deluxe, dontcha think?
