Not receiving SMS - lost some past SMS messages

Today - out of the blue - i checked my messages and i had 5 in my inbox when i used to have ALL of my sent messages visible. i sent a message to one of my friends and they sent one back, but i didn't receive it. i am also getting this message when i try to look in the SMS inbox: uncaught exception java.lang.NullPointerException

I have had the same problem a couple times. but at the same time, not only was it my SMS msg's, but all of my logs, even my call log. it's rather upsetting! Does anyone know why this is happening? I am about to take my phone back for a new one.
